C2CA Technology

About

Upcycling waste concrete

C2CA Technology is upcycling waste concrete into drop-in substitutes for virgin cement, sand, and aggregates. This approach addresses both the overconsumption of natural resources and the CO2 emissions challenge.

The technological advancements have led to a circular supply chain, turning construction-use-demolition into a recycling process.

Milestones

Achievements to date

Since its creation in 2016, C2CA has successfully demonstrated its technology in the field. Following a seed funding round in 2022, C2CA achieved its first commercial milestone. The full demo line was operational by 2023, processing 1,000 tons of waste concrete. Their upcycled materials have been used in six reference construction projects under the Dutch Climate Envelope initiative, showcasing their quality and performance in real-world applications.

In 2024, PI Impact made its first investment in C2CA.

2016
C2CA was founded

In 2016, C2CA Technology was created in a partnership between GBN Group and TU Delft, as a spin-off from a European research project.

2022
Industrial testing success

Since 2022, the pilot facility in Hoorn has processed thousands of tons of waste concrete, proving the practical application and viability of C2CA’s upcycling technology on an industrial scale.

2024
First commercial partnership

Set to be operational in 2025, C2CA is building a flagship project in partnership with Dura Vermeer, to establish a first-of-its-kind commercial factory to process 150,000 tons of waste concrete annually.

In-depth

The challenge and the opportunity

Concrete, while essential to global infrastructure due to its affordability and superior properties, is also responsible for 8% of total global CO2 emissions, mainly due to cement production. With over 300 million tons of construction and demolition waste produced annually in Europe alone, the bulk being rubble, this problem is set to escalate as numerous post-war buildings reach their end-of-life.

C2CA is revolutionizing the construction industry. They are on a mission to build sustainable demand for circular materials, to become the global reference for waste concrete upcycling by 2030, and to reduce global CO2 emissions by 2%.
